THE PANGALANES CANAL in the East Part of Madagascar

is a union and succession of big lakes and small lakes and estuaries and lagoons and rivers and canals which were dug by men. The Pangalanes Canal which lies in the East coast of Madagascar from Farafangana at its South part till Toamasina ( Tamatave ) at its North part has about 660 Kms of length. The Pangalanes Canal is a very quiet and peaceful area for relax, for swimming-time, for discovering, for visits and for easy walking through typical Betsimisaraka villages and typical Antefasy villages and typical Antemoro villages and typical Antambahoaka villages ; also through lemurs forests and through orchids forests. Betsimisaraka ( from Mahanoro-Vatomandry till Toamasina and more ), Antefasy ( Farafangana ), Antemoro ( Manakara ) and Antambahoaka ( Mananjary ) are the tribes who live there. The Pangalanes Canal is always green like this web page because of its lush vegetation, an area which receive a lot of rain every year. Don't forget your umbrellas and your k-ways when you will go there ;-)

What can you do in THE PANGALANES CANAL ?

1- By Boat :
The main means of transport in the Pangalanes Canal is the boat. You can rent a little motorboat for just yourself ( from one person plus your local guide till more than 10 persons with your luggages ) such as at picture N° 1. You can do that for example if you sleep at a good or a fairly good hotel in the Pangalanes Canal and you do a trip-excursion of a half day with picnic lunch or of a full day along the Canal. You can do that too by common little motorboat-bus ( the people there call it 'Bateau-Brousse' or 'Lakana-Pasazy' from one big village to another fairly big village such as on the Rianila big river ( Brickaville ) if you want know more on the true life of Malagasy people ; but note that this is especially for adventurous tourists and for go-backpacking-tourists because you have to sleep at very basic huts for this kind of tourism. See picture N° 2 and picture N° 3. This type of tourism is very cheap ; this third one is very expensive : you can too rent a fairly luxurious motorboat for 2 days or for 3 days cruise-ship along the Pangalanes Canal. That means with one night or with two nights on the fairly luxurious little motorboat. We have a cook for that and we have 7 beds for you, with toilets and shower and hot water and a little terrace at the top of the boat. Thank you to contact me for ALL of these types of trip and thank you for your trust ;-)

PS : the pictures N° 1, N° 2, ..., till the picture N° 4 were taken by me ( Ravo.Madagascar ) during my trip there, in the Pangalanes Canal on February 2021 !

2- By 4WD vehicle-s :
The secund means of transport in the Pangalanes Canal is a good ar a fairly good 4WD vehicle. I advise you to have too a good or a fairly good mechanic-driver ; it's completely necessary to have it in a trip in Madagascar. It's better to have a fairly good 4WD vehicle with a good mechanic-driver than to have an excellent 4WD vehicle with airconditioning etc. with a normal driver. I have many friends who are good mechanic-drivers ! Thank you for your trust ;-) But just few locations can be joined with a 4WD vehicle, such as Farafangana little town, Manakara and Mananjary middle-size towns, Mahanoro and Vatomandry little towns, Toamasina big town and few villages such as Ambila Lemaitso ( which has wonderful beaches ), Manambato lake ( which has wonderful beach too ) and Andovoranto ( a very typical fishermen village ). After that, you have to use the boat system or the walking system to discover the surrounding areas.

3- By Foot, that means walking & hiking :
There are three types of walk in the Pangalanes Canal : an easy walk where children and old persons can do ( such as in Akanin'ny Nofy area -The Nest of Dream- ; see below ). A normal walk of about two hours or more everywhere such as in Farafangana area, in Manakara area ( to see the fishermen ), in Mananjary area, in Akanin'Ny Nofy area ( such as in Andranokoditra typical village ). And finally a hard and a fairly hard hiking such as in Andovoranto area, exemple to Manerinerina peasants village through marshes ( picture N° 4 ), to see litchis plantations and oranges plantations -Voahangy-, to see local alcohool-drink little factory -Betsabetsa, from sugar cane fermentation-, and to see beautiful landscapes such as the little Andobo lake in Andavakimena forest ( Andavakimenarana forest ).

4- By Train :
For now, 2021, you have to take your vehicle, or your 4WD vehicle, or your bus first from Antananarivo ( Tana ) till Moramanga. That means it's better to sleep one night in Moramanga because of the morning departure of the train. Because the train starts in Moramanga middle-size town. The if you are an adventurous tourist, you can stop in Brickaville. But if you are a tourist like every tourist, you can stop in the beautiful village of Ambila Lemaitso or you can stop at the end of the train in Toamasina ( Tamatave ). Or you can stop in Andranokoditra too and to rent a little motorboat to the Palmarium lemurs Park in Akanin'Ny Nofy. For more information about the Train-Trip, thank you to read my article at my web page : « Trip to Madagascar, a very original travel ». Awaiting your visit for next time, with my pleasure to help you and to guide you, all the best to you. Ravo.Madagascar

Akanin' ny Nofy ( The Nest of Dreams ) - East of Madagascar

A quiet spot nearby a big lake ( Ampitabe lake ) where you can visit typical villages where huts are always built of falafa ( traveller's tree ) . But the most important thing to do there is to walk and to discover its private reserve of lemurs of 35 ha : the Palmarium ( one of THE BEST park to see different species of lemurs in Madagascar ).

Nature lovers will be happy to find many species of lemurs ( more than 5 species ) in a green forest area. An enjoyable walk of 2 or 3 hours or more if you have time for example to see some points of view and to see the carnivorous plants nearby the lake of crocodiles ( not far from Ampitabe lake ). With its numerous wild spots & desert sand banks, Akanin'ny Nofy is a real « Beach in the forest ».

Dear readers ,
I'm at The Pangalanes Canal in the East part of Madagascar. Nothing has changed here since a long time ago ; always quiet and always wonderful. The lemurs are always here awaiting you, and the very rare nocturnal lemur the Aye Aye are now here too ( of course with a little ... extra cost ).

Dear X and Y, a lot of memorable souvenirs we have together. It's 10 p.m. and I continue to write you before the extinguish of the light ; oh it can be at midnight or it can be at 10.05 p.m. Outside I hear the soft sound of water lapping against the lake shore. It's wonderful to hear the sound of the nature. And tomorrow the lemurs will welcome us with joy and loud noise ; mosquitos too will welcome us with their joyful bzzz bzzz. Yeah, every creature is happy at The Pangalanes Canal. My client sleeps a long time ago ; me I continue to write you in the same time I hear good and relaxing music : nostalgic music of my childhood such as Demis Roussos or Fausto Papetti. Outside it's very quiet, no noise, no dog, no car, just the soft sound of water lapping against the lake shore. I hear relaxing music such as « Il Silenzio » of Dalida. Strange : I'm not sleepy, just a little bit tired.

God bless you ,

Andasibe-Périnet Nature Reserve and
Mantadia National Park - Madagascar ( in the North part of the Pangalanes Canal )

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park ( formerly known as Perinet )

Is actually made up of two parks : Reserve Speciale Analamazaotra and Mantadia National Park. Its proximity to the capital Tana ( Antananarivo ), 140 Km away , or 3 - 4 hours drive along Route Nationale 2, makes this one of the more popular and easily accessible parks in Madagascar.

The Fauna that you usually see at « Andasibe Perinet - Mantadia National Park » are :

Indri Indri ( the nowadays largest lemur in the world, an endangered lemur ), Black & white ruffed lemur, Eastern wolly lemur, Red-bellied lemur , Brown rufous lemur, Rufous mouse lemur & Diademed sifaka. Parsoni chameleon, Brevicornis chameleon, Chamaeleo gastrotenia, Brookesia, Nasutus chameleon, Zonosaurus sp. & Phelsuma sp. lizards for reptiles.

AND Madagascar paradise flycatcher, Blue coua, Madagascar turtle dove, Madagascar vasa parrots, Forest-rock trush, Madagascar brush-warbler, Madagascar partridge, Madagascar little grebe, Common moorhen, Madagascar coucal, Malagasy kingfisher, Blue vanga, Red-fronted coua, Madagascar bulbul, Madagascar mannikin, Madagascar red fody, Common myna, Tylas vanga, Madagascar magpie-robin, Stonechat, Cuckoo-roller & Madagascar cisticola for birds.

It's better to have one full day to visit these two Parks Andasibe Perinet and Mantadia,

A good trekking through Pandanus trees and tree-ferns. Where you can see too a large numbers of epiphytes and orchids. Andasibe Perinet - Mantadia National Parkis in a mid-altitude rainforest ( about 1000 m - 1200 m ), very easy to get to, just at 3 Kms to the North of the main N2 Antananarivo-Toamasina road ; about 140 Kms or four hours drive from Antananarivo.

The pleasant drive over highlands into the escarpment passes through many mud-hut villages and picturesque mountain landscapes. The climate is not too hot, and rain falls mainly at night so the mistshrouded rainforest creates an awesome spectacle in the early morning.

You can visit too the village of Andasibe which is a small medieval village. But it's a village which merits a couple of hours exploring and soaking up its inherent serenity. Andasibe and Mantadia area lies in a region of low hills covered by degraded forest and is punctuated by beautiful small lakes.

The most striking feature about the Indri Indri is its voice : while other lemurs grunt, the Indri Indri sings an eerie and very loud wailing sound that resembles a police siren, and it carries for up to 3 Km away. Family group often occupy ranges which are proclaimed by territorial calls, helping to maintain spacing between groups of Indri. The best time to spot the Indri Indri is either early morning or late afternoon.

Ravo is a real professional guide, in a country where professionalism is sometimes lacking. He is good at planning a trip, and always seizes an opportunity when there is one. An example : once our small group of eight made a short train journey, just to get the feel of train travel in Mada - as the locals call Madagascar -. It was interesting to see how the arrival of the train shook up the quiet lives of the villagers who came to the station to sell their goods and to watch and be part of the conundrum. After the train journey our two drivers with their SUVs were to come and pick us up. As it happened, they were not there when we got out of the train. Flat tyre ? engine trouble ? out of petrol ? Who knows. To make good use of the time we had to wait, Ravo took us to a nearby health centre. We could see with our own eyes how this centre was lacking in even basic medical equipment. Ravo also seized the opportunity to explain us how heath care works ( or doesn't work ) in Mada, and what the different levels of health care consist of. Ravo is a very congenial man who is always friendly and who never loses his temper. I can recommend him to any possible visitor of the splendid Isle of Madagascar René Weemaels ( English teacher ) - Laarheide 282 - 1650 Beersel - Belgium

With 8 friends we toured for 3 weeks Madagascar from west to east. Ravo had organised the trip from A to Z and considering all the imponderables of travelling in Africa, it all turned out just great. What we particularly appreciated : his good humour and his resourcefulness under any circumstance. Just one example, the 8 of us being of unequal fitness, he always managed to find us several guides to walk us on different tracks through the various parks ( Tsingy, Isalo, Andringitra ) such that all of us would equally enjoy the journey, and we did. What to say more : try out Ravo, you won’t regret it, on the contrary, you’ll have not only a lifetime memory of a stunning country but a new ‘friend’. Ravo is an excellent and very knowledgeable guide. Added to his extremely friendly and easy going personality it makes for the best experience. He had a well prepared plan for my trip and didn't mind to modify by my last minute request. Very punctual and professional, he will make sure that you have nothing to think about, but to enjoy your trip and adventure. He made sure that I will see all major attractions within the geographical range my time could cover and of course the budget I had. Thank you !

• Brian & Linda Jones, Australia
The tour all went smoothly and as planned. Ravo was very clear about expenses and there were no nasty surprises. He also gave us, prior to our arrival, an accurate estimation of extra costs. He always put our wishes first, and ensured that we were well looked after everywhere we stayed. All in all a wonderful experience.

Terri Evans, Canada
Ravo was an incredible guide and a genuinely nice person. My arrival was not without hiccups as my bag did not arrive with me, but Ravo was most helpful and knowledgeable about how the airport system works that I did not concern myself with it. We had a schedule and I left the airport bagless, but unconcerned. I picked it up on my way out of the country a week later. There was nothing that Ravo did not think of as we traveled and my list of experiences was completely met ! 100%. I highly recommend Ravo !

Richard & Laura Moore, Canada
We have just returned to Canada after our 16 days tour with Ravo. To be expected, this trip was exhausting given the fact that both of us were over 80 years of age, the itinerary was modified to some extent. Ravo was a very accommodating guide, looking after our concern, and providing us with plenty of information about the country. We would recommend him to any person(s) visiting Madagascar. Thanks Ravo -NB : it was a true birdwatching tour-

• Susan Wake & Mark Locquat, New Zealand
Dear Ravo. Thank you so much. The tour has been really excellent. Your knowledge is fantastic and thanks for your patience and help with our requested focus on plants - you have really found great guides. Thanks for sharing 3 weeks on the road, a long time and lots of adventures but very rewarding and lots of fun ! We have learnt so much about the people, landscapes, plants and animals of Madagascar. Thanks for this wonderful itinerary.

Heidi Brandstadt family ( 3 persons ), Canada
Ravo was excellent from the moment we started booking our Madagascar trip until he dropped us off at the airport in Tana ( Antananarivo ). He was prompt with his emails while we were trying to book the trip and was attentive, informative, funny and kind while we were travelling. We jam packed a lot of travel for 2 weeks but he was able to set up an itinerary and take care of our needs without any issues. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and were enthralled with the culture and beauty of Madagascar, all thanks to Ravo

• Haiyong Liu ( alias Bryan ) - 4 persons, China
Ravo is a nice person and can be trusted, we have a lot of fun with him. Thank you Ravo. -NB : it was a tour combined with a birdwatching tour-
